2. What we process, why, and on which legal basis
| Processing | Data | Purpose | Legal basis | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compression in Offline mode (the default) | None: the file, its content and its name stay in your browser and are never sent to us | Compress the file you chose, on your own device | No processing of personal data by us | Nothing is stored by us. The result stays in your browser until you download it or close the tab: in memory or, for very large results, in the browser’s own temporary files, which the browser deletes itself. |
| Compression in Server mode (only when you select Server) | The uploaded file and its content, file name, file sizes, your IP address | Perform the compression you requested; enforce per-network rate limits and concurrency caps | Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of the requested service); Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (abuse protection) | Files: deleted on download or within 16 minutes after the job. Job details incl. IP address: up to about 30 minutes. IP address for rate limiting: up to 1 hour. |
| Server logs | IP address, timestamps, request metadata, file sizes and types, error codes; never file content or file names | Operate and secure the service | Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR | [PLACEHOLDER: retention period] |
3. Documents you upload
The compress tool has two modes. In Offline mode, the default, your browser compresses the file on your device: the file is not uploaded and we receive nothing about it. In Server mode, which is used only when you select it (for example because your browser cannot compress offline, or for a file above the offline limit), the file is sent to our server and processed there only by our own compression engine, only to perform the compression you requested. Files you upload in Server mode may contain personal data of third parties; you are responsible for being permitted to have them processed by us. We do not read them ourselves, pass them to no one else, and delete our copies on download or within minutes as described in section 2.
4. Recipients and processors
- Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd.: Azure hosting of the compression service [PLACEHOLDER: region].
- [PLACEHOLDER: hosting provider of this website]: serves these pages and the offline engine, and relays Server-mode uploads and results to the compression service without storing them.
All processors act on our instructions under data processing agreements in the sense of Art. 28 GDPR [PLACEHOLDER: confirm agreements are in place].
5. Transfers to third countries
Files are compressed on our own service in the EU [PLACEHOLDER: region] and are not passed to recipients outside the EU/EEA. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm that the hosting provider of this website does not transfer personal data to third countries, or name the transfer mechanism in force.]
7. Your rights
You have the right to access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time with effect for the future. To exercise your rights, contact [PLACEHOLDER: privacy@…].
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Austria this is the Datenschutzbehörde, Barichgasse 40–42, 1030 Vienna, www.dsb.gv.at.
